5.3 Personnel, Funding & Facilities

Candidates develop, implement, and evaluate policies and procedures that support teaching and learning in school libraries.

To meet all the objectives of a school library/media center, things must be organized. A plan for operating and guidelines regarding what is acceptable and proper are needed to ensure equitable and unfettered access to materials and information. This element charges us to create or implement the required policies and procedures, and to document and publish the information.
The policies and procedures wiki I created with my classmates is an excellent example of this standard element in action. Using our respective district's policies, and those of others we could find and review, we compiled the information we thought was important in a single location. We divided the preliminary work by interest – I was responsible for reconsideration of materials policy, inventory, circulation system, and library class schedule. Once the information was added to the wiki, we edited and tweaked the pages, including adding graphics, pictures, and insight.
